In conjunction with Science North, the schools of the Rainbow District School Board have participated on an annual basis in the Math, Science and Technology Olympics event. Grade 7 and 8 students from schools across the board travel to Science North for a challenge that the Director of Education described as, ".... an opportunity to apply what they are learning in the classroom in an enjoyable and creative way.” Michele Henschel, Curriculum
Co-ordinator for Science and Technology
added that, "In the
morning, students will answer questions to
test their knowledge and skills in math,
science and technology. A dedicated
team of teachers from the Rainbow District
School Board have worked diligently to
prepare challenging questions related to
Science North exhibits and the Grade 7 and 8
math, science and technology
curriculum. At the end of the day,
teachers will tally the results to identify
the winners. In the early afternoon,
students will participate in a construction
challenge. This is an on-site event
prepared and evaluated by the staff at
Science North. It usually involves
building a structure of some sort with
simple materials such as straws and popsicle
sticks. There is a catch. The structure must
be used to accomplish a task. The
event will end with an awards ceremony that
parents/guardians and members of the public
are welcome to attend."
