The schools in the province of
Manitoba have been involved in the "Invent an Alien"
competition for over 31 years. At A. B. Ellis we
only entered it once and it appears that it may have
only happened once in Ontario. I wish I could
remember more of the details of this event, especially
since I was the person who coordinated it at the
school. The contest that we took part in
happened during the 1986-87 school year. It was
sponsored by the National Museum of Science and
Technology and Young Astronauts Canada. As it
explains in the document below, the challenge was to
design a creature capable of living on the planet
Mars. As I remember it, I held an in-school
contest and the most successful submissions were then
entered in this national contest.
As the document says, there were
regional and national prizes. At A. B. Ellis we
had 2 prize winners. In the Junior category,
grades 4 to 6, the winner was Christine Liljalehto.
She came first in her age group at the school. And then went on to win a First in the National Contest. In the Intermediate category our candidate was Eddie Thomas, who was in Grade 8 at the time. Eddie was also a winner at the
National Level and in his category the prize was
an all-expenses paid trip to the Space Camp in the
USA.
